Recent Updates in the Aged Care Industry: What You Need to Know
1. New Aged Care Act
The Australian Government has introduced the Aged Care Bill 2024, which will come into effect on July 1, 2025. This new legislation aims to enhance the quality of care provided to older Australians by setting higher standards for aged care services. The new Act will encourage providers to deliver high-quality care and improve the lives of those accessing aged care services in their homes, community settings, and residential aged care homes.
2. Support at Home Program
Starting from July 1, 2025, the current Home Care Packages and Short-Term Restorative Care Programme will be replaced by the Support at Home program. This new program aims to help older people live independently at home for longer by providing more tailored support. The program will offer eight ongoing levels of funding, support for home modifications, and fast access to assistive technology, including a new equipment loan scheme.
3. Wage Increases for Aged Care Workers
From January 1, 2025, aged care workers have seen further increases in award wages, building on the 15% rise implemented in 2023. This increase is part of the government's efforts to ensure fair compensation for aged care workers and attract more professionals to the industry
4. Enhanced Consumer Protections and Fee Adjustments
The new Aged Care Act will also introduce enhanced consumer protections and fee adjustments. For example, the maximum room cost for residential aged care has increased, allowing providers to charge up to $750,000 without approval from the Independent Health and Aged Care Pricing Authority. This change aims to provide more flexibility for aged care providers while ensuring that older Australians receive high-quality care.
5. National Dementia Action Plan
The National Dementia Action Plan 2024–2034 has been released, aiming to improve the quality of life for people living with dementia, their carers, and families. This plan includes initiatives to raise awareness, provide better support, and enhance research into dementia care.
6. Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP)
The ACCAP has announced the results of its latest grant opportunity, providing funding to residential-based aged care services. This program aims to support aged care providers in improving their facilities and services, ensuring that older Australians receive the best possible care.
7. Single Assessment System Workforce
The new Single Assessment System workforce will make it easier for older people to enter aged care and access different services as their needs change. This initiative aims to streamline the assessment process and ensure that older Australians receive timely and appropriate care.
These updates reflect the government's commitment to improving the aged care sector and ensuring that older Australians receive the highest quality of care. As the industry continues to evolve, it is essential for providers, workers, and consumers to stay informed about these changes and their implications.
